the town cup

The Town Cup is a silver rose bowl challenge cup that is one of the most prestigious prizes to be awarded during Burnham Week.

Burnham on Crouch Urban District Council made an appeal for funds to purchase a new trophy in 1926 and received donations from the Chamber of Trade, Boatyards, Breweries and residents to a total of £72 that allowed a silver rose bowl to be designed by Mr N S Gilbert who was a local jeweller.

Competition for the splendid new trophy was limited to larger yachts over 15 tons.

The first competition for the Town Cup took place on 6 September 1927 and has taken place at every Burnham Week since that first race.

The Cup is presented to the winner by the Mayor of Burnham on Couch along with a pennant marked ‘Town Cup Winner’ and the year which the winner will be able to fly on their yacht for future years.

Another of the traditions associated with the Cup is that the winner fills the cup with champagne and visits all yacht clubs on the Quay inviting fellow yachtsmen to drink from the cup.

Over the years the criteria for entry has been changed along with the changes in the yachting world but the Town Cup remains the most prestigious  trophy on offer during Burnham Week.
