about the council

The Burnham-On-Crouch Town Council comprises ten councillors, five representing the South Ward and five the North. The Council’s affairs are administered from the Council Offices in Chapel Road by the Town Clerk and his Assistant.

Until 1974 Burnham-on-Crouch Urban District Council administered local affairs for Eastern Essex including Burnham on Crouch. The reorganisation of local government saw Burnham UDC amalgamating with Maldon RDC and Maldon UDC to form the new Maldon District Council.

Burnham Town Council was formed to represent the parish of Burnham on Crouch at Parish Council level.

The Town Council has a Mayor who is elected by fellow councillors at the annual meeting.

Meetings of the Town Council, which are open to the public, are held once a month in the Council Chamber whilst planning matters are discussed twice a month - details of all forthcoming meetings are displayed on the Town’s five notice boards.

At the end of every Town Council meeting, members of the public do get an opportunity to ask questions of Members of the Town Council and the Town Clerk.

The Town Council acts on behalf of the Town in drawing matters of local concern to the relevant authorities and pushing for action. It also provides public seats, planting areas, litter bins, dog waste bins and Christmas trees and festive lighting.

The Town Council owns some local facilities such as Burnham Allotments and manages other facilities such as Station House.

A Civic Service in June/July and a seasonal Carol Service are organised while other events during the year include a reception to thank local organisations for their hard work and to present the Town Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement and Citizen of the Year Awards.

The prestigious Town Cup is presented at the end of Burnham Week, with the presentation of the St. Matthew’s Cup, also for sailing, in early autumn.

Many local clubs and organisations are helped with financial assistance in the form of grants - all local applications are considered.

However, the main activity of the Town Council is to help to keep the Town a happy, secure and pleasant place for both residents and visitors.
